Chiawana clinches playoffs with win over Southridgesteve graff

KENNEWICK — It should surprise exactly no one that Chiawana Riverhawks came back big in the second half Friday night after falling behind by two scores early to Southridge.

Austin Urlacher ran for 154 yards and a touchdown as a second-half injury replacement, Chiawana’s defense slammed the door shut after the break, and Logan Ellsworth kicked a 29-yard field goal with in the final minute to lead the Riverhawks to a 17-14 win over the Suns at Lampson Stadium.

The victory combined with Walla Walla’s 35-33 loss to Kamiakin locked up a playoff berth for Chiawana (5-3, 3-3 Mid-Columbia), which has won five straight after an 0-3 start.

“We have the mentality that we never quit, that the game’s never over until (the clock) is :00,” said Riverhawks quarterback Joey Zamora, who is the epitome of comeback after throwing a pick-six at the Southridge 5 on the game’s first drive.

Zamora found Dre Dorton on a 37-yard scoring play with 4:22 left to pull Chiawana within two points.

Zamora threw for three touchdowns — he hit Avery for a 21-yard score in the first quarter — while going 14-for-24 for 204 yards. Avery caught five passes for 86 yards, Dorton four for 62 as Zamora spread the wealth to seven different receivers.

Ellsworth Game Winner v Kamiakin

Chiawana tops Kamiakin 24-21

It’s not often a sophomore place kicker gets carried off the field on his teammates’ shoulders.

But when the kicker just made his first career field goal with no time remaining he better get carried off.

Chiawana’s Logan Ellsworth booted a 27-yarder to lead the Riverhawks past Kamiakin 24-21 on Friday in a Mid-Columbia Conference game at Lampson Stadium.

“There is no feeling like that — winning one for your team,” Ellsworth said. “The whole team was telling me I could do it. I just didn’t think about it. I just put it through.”

Ellsworth, the second-string kicker, was thrust into action because of an injury to Isaac Mitz last week.

He made three extra points in the first half but had never attempted a field goal in varsity action.

Wenatchee football falls to Chiawana

Thursday, September 27, 2012

PASCO — Several key statistics from Thursday’s nonleague football contest between Wenatchee and Chiawana were roughly even.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, they came up short where it counted.

The Riverhawks defeated Wenatchee 14-6 at Edgar Brown Stadium in a game that was relocated to Pasco because of poor air quality in the Wenatchee Valley.

The defeat was the Panthers’ third straight.

Chiawana racked up 299 total yards to Wenatchee’s 307, and both squads recorded 17 first downs. The Panthers had the ball for just over 25 minutes, while the Riverhawks had possession for just under 23 minutes. Wenatchee had two turnovers, and Chiawana had one.

The Riverhawks scored first on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Joey Zamora to Jordan Aviles with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Wenatchee responded in the third quarter as Alex Hopkins caught a 7-yard scoring pass from Dillon Sugg, but failed on the conversion and remained behind by one point.

Chiawana extended its lead later in the quarter on a Clifton Lozano 9-yard run to complete the scoring.

Isaiah Brandt-Sims ran for 121 yards on 28 carries. Sugg completed 16 of 36 passes for 109 yards and two interceptions.

Zamora completed 14 of 26 passes for 198 yards and one interception, while Lozano led the Riverhawks in rushing with 64 yards on 18 carries.
